How to start a personal Bible study

You do not need to be an expert or have everything figured out to open the Bible. This guide gives you a gentle, doable way to begin a personal Bible study — clear first steps, a rhythm you can keep, and people at CBA Orlando ready to walk with you.

Start with one Gospel, not the whole Bible

If you have never read the Bible on your own, begin with the Gospel of John or Mark. Reading about the life of Jesus first gives everything else its meaning. One short passage a day is more than enough to begin.

Build a small, repeatable rhythm

Consistency matters more than length. A simple rhythm most people can keep:

  • Pick a fixed time and place — even ten minutes counts.
  • Read a short passage slowly, twice.
  • Ask: what does this show me about God, and about myself?
  • Pray one honest sentence back to God about what you read.

Keep notes and bring your questions

Write down a verse that stood out and any questions it raised. You are not meant to answer everything alone — questions are a sign you are paying attention, and they are welcome here.

Do not study alone for long

Personal study grows best alongside community. A short conversation with a mentor or a small group will steady you and keep you encouraged. The Word, prayer, and people are meant to go together.
