How to join a small group

A small group is simply a handful of people who meet regularly to read the Bible, pray, and care for one another between worship services. You do not need to know anyone, bring anything, or have your life in order — you only need to show up. This guide walks you through finding a group and feeling at home in it.

What a small group actually is

At CBA Orlando, a small group is a few people — often six to twelve — who gather in a home, a café, or a room at the church during the week. It is not a class with a teacher up front; it is a circle. People share a meal or coffee, open the Bible together, pray for one another’s real needs, and grow into friendships that hold up during hard weeks.

Because we are a Brazilian Seventh-day Adventist family, many groups meet in Portuguese, but you will also find space for English and Spanish speakers. Ask and we will point you to the right fit.

What to expect your first night

The first time is the hardest, and it is usually far easier than people fear. Here is what a typical evening looks like:

  • Arrive a few minutes early and someone will greet you by name.
  • There is usually something to eat or drink — you do not need to bring anything.
  • A short time of singing or prayer, then an open passage of Scripture and honest conversation.
  • No one will put you on the spot. You are free to simply listen until you are ready to share.

You can come once just to see how it feels. There is no commitment in visiting.

How to find the right group for you

The best group is usually the one that fits your week, not the perfect one on paper. A few things to weigh:

  • Day and time — pick one you can realistically keep most weeks.
  • Location — closer to home makes consistency far easier.
  • Season of life — there are groups for young families, couples, singles, students, and seniors.
  • Language — let us know what you are most comfortable in.

If you are not sure, tell us a little about yourself and we will suggest one or two to try.

Bringing your family and children

Families are very welcome. Many groups make space for children to play nearby while parents talk, and some are built entirely around families with kids. If you are coming with little ones, just let the host know ahead of time so they can plan a little space and snacks. You will not be the only family figuring it out as you go.

Settling in and staying

Give a new group three or four visits before deciding. The first night you are a guest; by the third you are starting to belong. Real friendship and trust take a few weeks to grow — that is normal, not a sign the group is wrong for you.

  • Save the host’s contact and let them know when you will or will not be coming.
  • Offer something small when you are ready — bringing a dish, opening in prayer, giving someone a ride.
  • Bring your questions. A small group is one of the best places to ask the things you would not raise in a crowd.
